"The Gallery in the Hood"​

Established in 1989 by Chief Baba Shongo Obadina, the William H. Thomas Gallery—affectionately known as "The Gallery in the Hood"—is one of the oldest continuously operated Black-owned independent art galleries in the United States. Located in the Olde Towne East neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio, the gallery has been a cornerstone for promoting the work and careers of local Black artists.​


The gallery has hosted a variety of artists from the local community, throughout the nation, and from Africa, Europe, and Asia. It offers workshops for children, teens, adults, and seniors of diverse backgrounds, think tanks, productions, and the African Village Arts Festival held since 2007.
