About

Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia

The Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia (BHMVA) is a cornerstone institution committed to collecting, preserving, interpreting, and presenting the rich history and culture of African Americans in Virginia. Founded in 1981 by Carroll Anderson Sr., the museum relocated in 2016 to the historic Leigh Street Armory in the Jackson Ward neighborhood of Richmond. It offers permanent and rotating exhibits that explore slavery, emancipation, civil rights, the arts, and the enduring contributions of Black Virginians. BHMVA also hosts educational programs, youth workshops, public conversations, archival preservation, and venue rentals—all centered on awareness, pride, and intergenerational learning.
