About

Hakim’s Bookstore

Founded by Dawud Hakim in the late 1950s, Hakim’s Bookstore began as a trunk-side effort to share Black history and literature. By 1959, it was the first permanent Black-owned bookstore in Philadelphia. A source of inspiration and resistance during the Civil Rights era, the store has become a living archive of Black thought.

Now stewarded by his daughter, Yvonne Blake, the store thrives as both a local landmark and an international resource. Withstanding near-closure in 2014 and resurgence during the pandemic, it now operates both in-store and online, welcoming new generations into the fold.
